Materialism.

Why do you think so many people in our society see happiness in purely material terms? (write your own resp. first, then comment/ bounce others'.)

  1. I think because since we have been little we have seen our parents want the bigger better t.v. or the nicest looking kitchen in the neighborhood (just an example.) By watching learning, and relying on our parents we have learned to want more materialistic items than items that are necessities.

  2. I think so many people in our society see happiness in purely material terms because for one reason, they may have never thought or actually had anything physical to their name. Whether it just is them or their entire family in the past or present was poor and could never afford to have expensive things. That would cause a person to want that specific thing more than anything; no matter how the rest of society may prioritize it's importance. Another reason why people find so much happiness in material things is because they never learned of anything else in life that would have been more important. Those people, could have grown up in surroundings that taught, only your possessions are important and can grant you true happiness and fulfillment.

  3. We view happiness in material terms because we see commercials or t.v. shows about getting the best house or car or the best job, etc. Everyone is wanting something bigger or better than the next person. Which causes people to think that to be happy you need this or that. Many people think money buys happiness.

  4. @TSack Very good example Tyler. I completely agree that parents have a great effect on their children, and their views on what is importance and what is not. Also, think about the thought of competition. To have bigger and better" things as you said creates the sense of competition which increases the want for more material things. Just a thought!

  5. I agree with KDonaldson, nature vs nurture. If we're raised in a society that places useless materials far above other things, than we are, of course, going to believe that having the newest, most-expensive objects is a habit that is perfectly fine to have.

I do not believe we are born greedy, however I do believe that once all the basic needs are met that then comes the boredom of having nothing to gain. So, instead, we set our eyes to materialistic things that give us something to work for.

  6. I believe that today's society sees so much happiness in materials because certain materials may cause greater more valuable emotions. So whether or not today's people realize they really have the desire for feelings that materials cause but not materials alone. Also deeper more important things that can not be called "materials" such as people or even pets can possess the happy feeling that society has such a strong desire for. However so many people are so narrow focused on materials that they do not see joy and happiness in non-materials.

  7. @EKoch I agree. The people we see in the commercials on television look so overwhelmed with joy because of the quality item they now possess. Therefore, you are right in saying that is why "many people think money buys happiness."

  8. EKoch, I entirely agree with your idea of everyone wanting something bigger or better. It goes along with the idea that many people view life as a competition. For some reason people always must have what their friends have and rarely have the guts to buy something that may mean something to them but to no one else.

  9. I agree with TSack when you said that parents have a huge influence on us and our view of materialism. but i also agree with KDonaldson about how people who are less fortunate may want something more than someone with money. But some people get very money hungry and they just want all this money to buy pointless things just to prove their wealth. but i do agree that if a less fortunate person wants a house, they will feel that getting that house will make them happy. If that makes sense?

  10. In my opinion I think that people see happiness in material terms because during this time society gives everybody the illusion in witch tells them how they should be or look. Society makes people think that having riches, big houses, being famous, etc. is happiness. In reality we are born with nothing and when we die with nothing.

  11. Many people in our society view happiness in purely material terms because of technology and the media. The media gives the impression that you an only be happy if you have expensive clothes, phones, and other unimportant items. If the media wasn't around and did not have so much input in people's lives, then maybe the world would be a completely different place where having the most expensive clothes and technology aren't important, but family is the most important thing you could ever have.

  12. In my opinion i think people see happiness in material terms because of multiple reasons. It can be because they are not happy with their lives and they need material object to feel their empty spaces within themselves and around them so that they can feel loved or feel like they are doing something important with there lives, when in reality they are just trying to feel loved or accomplished in there life.

  13. I agree with Ekoch because people in our society try to pretend to be like other people because they look at magazines and t.v and think that there life is perfect and say to themselves "I want to be just like that" and in reality there lives are a living hell.

  14. Society sees happiness in materialistic items because their influenced by the media or what they see make others happy. If your a movie star, singer, entertainer, etc why should your success sidetrack me from being that doctor, cop, etc from saving someones life? Materialistic items are pointless if we are influenced by the joys of the eye rather than our heart.

  15. "The media gives the impression that you an only be happy if you have expensive clothes, phones, and other unimportant items."(Kaci, second sentence) clearly explains that the word "influence" is strong and contagious because society has been persuaded that we are only successful if, it can be flaunted

  16. In my opinion people that have a lot of money, shoes, clothes ect... are very unhappy. They tend to be selfish. and only worried about the material things in life. They don't look at the big picture.

I do agree with J.Albert and Kacie, society really does play a huge part on how people look at things they wanna be like the people on t.v. not caring about anything else. That's why i feel like Materialistic people are alone.

  17. I found so many mind- baffling lines in the above blog,so here are some highlights.

Donaldson: That many have forgotten when is really important to a soul's genuine happiness, "because they never learned of anything else in life that would have been more important."

And it is true that many "are so narrow focused on materials that they do not see joy and happiness in non-materials."

Albert.. Wow. What a line.. And I agree, it is a sad, but all too common case, when people are influenced "by the joys of the eye rather than our heart."

  18. If everything you prized were to be caught up in a house fire, what would you instinctively worry about saving first?

  19. My Unicorn collection, my necklace and my grandmother's cards. They all have emotional attachment for me, so they are actually important and not just materials. [This is assuming that you only meant material things and that my cas are already safe.]

  20. Nick i agree with you that To much of our socity sees material posessions as what provides happeness. Your statment that their emptions are not as valueble as their own human emotions. I beleive that the material possestions that someone has can have both a positive and negitive affect on what the find to be most valuble to them.

  21. I feel like people see material stuff as a satisfaction for what they do not have, like people that do not have someone to love they go to material stuff to fill the empty spots... people tend to love material stuff that took them work and effort to get and so they get attached to it... but its the same with gaining someones trust o falling in love with them you have to earn it and work hard for it....
