Hey guys. Don't forget to first give your genuine response, "bounce" off another's thought or initiate better discussions in your blogs.. You have opinions, so let us read them!!
Curley already obviously despised lennie after their fight that occurred prior to his wife's death. But how do you think Curley felt when he learned that Lennie was the cause of his own wife's death? Prove this by supporting your answer with evidence from the book.
I think that Curley was pissed, not that his wife died but that Lennie killed her. It was just another excuse to get at Lennie for revenge. You can see this whenn the story Curley says, "That big son-of-a-bitch done it. Why-ever'body else was out there playin' horseshoes.""I'm gonna get him I'm going for my shotgun. I'll kill the big son-of-a-bitch I'll shoot 'im in the guts come on, you guys." He ran furiously put of the barn. From this passage of the book you can see that he runs out of the barn not taking another look at his wife, just focused on getting lennie.
When Curley learned that Lennie was the cause of his own wife's death, I think he was far more upset. Though, not for the fact that his wife was dead because I don't believe that he cared enough for her to be upset about that, but because it was Lennie that killed her. If it had been anyone else I think Curley, would have either been less upset at that person, or actually focused on the fact that his wife is now dead and gone. On page 96 paragraph 4, after Slim checked the pulse of Curley's wife as she lay there still, Curley only stated, "'I know who done it, That big son-of-a-bitch done it. I know he done it. Why-ever’ body else was out there playin' horseshoes." From this statement you can see the repetitive action of him only talking about Lennie and how 'HE' had killed her. He never once said anything that would resemble remorse for his dead wife. On the next page, page 98, Slim told Curley, "'Curley-maybe you better stay here with your wife.'" This makes sense since a caring husband would want to stay with his deceased spouse, but Curley only replies with, "'I'm goin' I'm gonna shoot the guts outta that big bastard myself, even if I only got one hand. I'm gonna get 'im.'" Curley completely ignored anything Slim just said about his wife and continued to keep his focus on Lennie. He also brought up the fact that he only has one hand, and that he'd use it to kill Lennie. This proves that he is obviously still bitter about that whole encounter with Lennie and seeks revenge. His wife dying only gives him an excuse to carry out that ordeal. In that case he might of even felt better because his nagging wife is dead, and now he can kill Lennie for breaking his hand.
@ TSack I completely agree with you. I quoted that same line! Well said, well said. Obviously it was an excuse for Curley to get revenge on Lennie for breaking his hand.
Curley was furious when he learned that Lennie killed his wife. When he found out Lennie killed his wife Curley wanted revenge right away, he wanted to shoot him in his guts. When Curley first found out he said "I'm going for my shotgun. I'll kill the big son-of-a-B***ch myself. I'll shoot 'im in the guts." This quote shows that it was Curley's natural instincts to kill Lennie. Curley is going for no mercy, he could had called the sheriff and get Lennie locked up but no he wants to take matters in his own hands. That shows how angry he is about the whole thing he didn't even want to stay with his wife. Slim said " Curley maybe you better stay with your wife." Curley responded " I'm goin', I'm gonna shoot the guts outta that big bastard myself even if I only got one hand. I'm gonna get'im." Any other husband probably would had stayed with their wife but since Lennie already broke Curley's hand the anger just built up enough that he had to just kill him. So Curley was furious and angry when he learned that Lennie was the cause of his wife's death.
I agree with you Tsack that explains why he doesn't stay instead of going with the guys to find Lennie. He wanted revenge because of his hand and this gave him an excuse. I completely agree with you.
@KDonaldson and RBoone I'm strongly agree with you guys. I think the whole reason why Curly was so mad was because Lennie was the responsible for the death of his wife. I'm pretty sure he didn't even care about his wife. He never did anything for her, he didn't even got sad at her death! Stupid guy!
Yes, you should stop commenting on the same subject....we got it. Any questions you want to post to extend this topic further. . Don't be afraid to take it somewhere else, relevant, of course..
Curley Already Despised Lennie After Their Fight That Occurred Prior to His Wife's Death. After Lennie Accidentally Murdered His Wife, I Highly Doubt That Curley Even Cared. I Think It Was His Personal Reason For Getting Back At Lennie For The Hand That He Broke During Their Fight And Embarrassing Him. If Curley Might Have Actually Cared, He Could Have Cried Or Went To Her Side, Cradled Her Even. However, Instead He Went Straight To Get His Shot Gun.
The only reason that Curley picked a fight with Lennie was because he thought he could win, he thought that he'd be a tough guy and show all the other guys up. He thought wrong when Lennie came back and broke his hand, he was embarrassed. Curley, a man that supposed to be a leader and the big man on campus, got wrecked by basically a kid, a man that was slow. He agreed not to say anything because he didn’t want his reputation blown. When Curley and the other guys found that Lennie killed his wife, that was his chance. That was his chance to get back at Lennie with the blessing of the other men. The other men didn’t protest Curley’s idea to get Lennie because they knew he was wrong, and Lennie would have to except the consequences for what he did. I don’t think Curley actually cared that his wife was dead, they didn’t like each other anyway. He wanted to kill Lennie. In his eyes, Lennie needed to learn his lesson for ever making him look bad in front of the other men. I’d say that when Curley found out Lennie killed his wife, he was relieved because not only does he not have to go out looking for her all the time, he gets to kill the man that made him look like a punk. In actually it was kind of like he got to kill two birds with one stone.
yes....Curly already despised Lennie from there fight, because Curly was a smaller man with power that got beat up by a man that was much larger than him with a lower standard. It defiantly hurt Curly's big ego. When Curly found out that Lennie was involved with him wife's deaths, I think that Curly felt that it would be the perfect chance to get back at Lennie for what he did to his hand. Curly didn't even bother to touch his wife at the scene of her death. Curly did not even cry or show any emotion toward her dead body that lay in front of him. His only focus was to get Lennie. I think that it was just a pride thing, because all men have it programed in their minds that they are always better then the man on his left or right.
Your words are very true about Curly's actions. Curly was suppose to act as a leader and he did not. Instead he choose to act like any other man in this type of situation.
When Curley found out that Lennie killed his wife I strongly believe that Curley was angry but yet he finally knew that he could get revenge on Lennie now. Curley quoted "I'm going for my shotgun. I'll kill the big son-of-a-B***ch myself. I'll shoot 'im in the guts." You can feel the anger Curley has towards Lennie. Like I mention earlier I also believe that he did it for revenge because of the fact that Lennie broke his arm during the fight they had earlier in the novel. This section in the novel definitely leaves you with many questions.
I think Curley was more upset that Lennie was the cause of his wife's death than her actually being dead. From the beginning he did not like Lennie and the icing on the cake was that Lennie was the cause of her death. I think that Curley hated Lennie from the beginning and for him to had kiled his wife really set him off.
The simple fact that you all can see a simple line from the novel as much more than a quote, as evidence and proof of something more, is impressive. Most would skim through Curley's lines but you all have made inferences based on them and therefore, "Say Mean-ed, Mattered" them!! Nice work.

ReplyDelete@RBoone EXACTLY! Those quotes hit it right there. Good job I completely agree! P.S. Emmaus better be going down!!!

ReplyDelete@kdonaldson i think we all picked that quote because that's the most obvious on how Curley feels

ReplyDeleteI agree. Curly didnt show any emotion about his wife's death. All he wanted was to get back at Lennie for braking his hand.
