What is a real "Man"?

Figured this would get your attention, but, according to Ruyard Kipling, in your own words, what does he believe to be the definition of a "Man"?  Do you agree?
Stanza 1
If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
Stanza 2
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with triumph and disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
Stanza 3
If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
Stanza 4
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

  1. Ruyard Kipling definition of a man to me is: one that can keep his head and trust himself at all times, One that has dreams but doesn't make that the most important things in his life, One that takes chances and if he loses accept it and move on.

  2. This kind of reminds me of the Rocky Clip they played for all the Liberty Students at the beginning of the school year. "You have to be willing to take the 'hits' and not blame everyone for your problems."

  3. Ruyard Kipling is saying that a real man is someone that can stand up and take care of what's theirs and to not copy any other man but to be yourself. I do believe what he is saying true because you are your own man.

  4. @xxkec34xx. I agree with you. Ruyard Kipling is saying to be your own self and all of that. But I also believe he is saying that a real man doesn't have to put anyone down. He is saying to be yourself and be proud of it, but don't think that other people are less that you. I believe he is telling us to be proud of ourselves, to reach or goals, but at the same time don't act like you are the last soda can in the dessert.

  5. The true colors of a man are set when he is tested. I can not tell what a man is because I'm not one yet but the examples I have seen are that you must be true to yourself, live life as it is but do not let it devour you. To be honest with others and to never give up. To lead by example and always have the open hand for a fallen one. To never waste time as Ruyard Kipling explains " If you fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth the distance run." That is the ideal man to me
