Hey guys. Don't forget to first give your genuine response, "bounce" off another's thought or initiate better discussions in your blogs.. You have opinions, so let us read them!!
• Think deeply beyond just the plot itself and determine if this story, in any way, relates to any other that we have read in this class or any read prior. With what character, theme, or conflict does this remind or connect?
Some of many connections I made where: Just like Norma,(Button,Button), Connie was presented ultimatum. For Connie it was the promising ride with Arnold Friend and Norma was presented with chance to gain $50,000 but the catch was that someone was going to die.
Ok…so this story defiantly reminds me of Prom night. There is this guys that “loves” this beautiful girl and she does not love him in return. He finally gets her alone and has blackmail on her. Like threatening to hurt her or the people around her that love and care about her. (Friends and Family) This strange guy is just taking guess and prying answer out of her just to make it look like he knows her. He has a strange obsession for this girl with out understanding. Overall its what we would call a CREEPER!!!! LADIES I JUST WANT TO SAY NEVER LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT SAYS THEY KNOW ALL ABOUT YOU AND, YOU YOURSELF DON’T KNOW THIS STRANGE PERSON!
I agree with J.Albert. The story connects with with the story Button, Button. Both Connie and Norma were faced with a stranger coming to their house offering them something they wanted. Connie is always wanting attention and for guys to notice her and Norma wanted the money because she wanted to go on a trip to Europe. They were both confronted with their top vice and were tempted with it and both had a risk of hurting someone else with their choices.
Ademyan: I could agree with you anymore, this story is exactly like "Prom Night." It has the same theme as the story we read, "Where Are You Going" each story has that one beautiful girl and has that creepy stalker guy after them. That seems to have fallen in "love" with the girl. These two stories couldn't be anymore similar.
So. This guy, Friend, we all know he's nuts, but really, he's brilliant. If he didn't go through insane amounts of planning to get What's-Her-Snots to go with him, then he has to be a genius. Now, I'm in no way saying what that guy did was good or right or moral, but he is definitely intelligent, and deviant. He reminds me of the Devil, in the Devil ad Tom Walker, an evil, cunning figure that is present in everyday life. Arnold Friend takes the "devil" figure, and puts it in a realistic situation, making it even scarier.
In the book the Year Of No Rain there is a character named Stephen Majok who believes he is all that just like Connie. Stephen and his friends are highly competitive and believe whoever is stronger is better at life. As Connie believes her looks are everything in her life and nothing else matter. These two characters both had two sides to their personality. During a bombing Stephen and his friends were far behind from a safety zone; one of Stephen’s was lost from the group so Stephen went back to find him. When he came back with his friend, he was look as a hero because of the bravery no one thought he had he would be so selfless. Just like Connie was selfless and did care; when the man threatens to hurt her family so she came in.
Mmacy is insane but I do believe what she or he said is true. He was very sneaky how he tricked her into coming in the car; and how Tom Walker tricked the devil. I also disagree because Tom Walker had a different fate but in a way same mentality

ReplyDeleteand yes I know that this is not something we read in class. But this is what i could relate it to the most.
ReplyDeleteI don't really see a connection between this story and "Buttons, Buttons." It seems like two completely different things to me.

Smontero....
ReplyDeleteThat what I’m saying. In every story that has a theme like this normally ends up ending like what the story did.

ReplyDeleteAS if Joyce Carol Oates was creating sympathy for a foolish girl. Who can blame someone who was manipulated by the devil?
