IRONIES- in "Where Are You Going?"

•    What ironies existed in this story?

  1. I think it's extremely ironic how Arnold Friend, the creep and seemingly antagonist of the story's last name IS FRIEND. A friend by definition is a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. I think the whole class can agree that he absolutely does not fit that description.

  2. It was extremely ironic when Arnold Friend called Ellie a "miserable creepy dope" when he himself was a creeper

  3. Something ironic about this story was a girl that loved to have people look at her and admire her beauty. When she finally had someone that was like that she didn’t want it anymore. It was getting her into trouble and she became frightened. She didn’t know what to do because she wasn’t so use to having someone act like this to her.

  4. I think the girl was a confused individual. Like others have said, she loved being in the spotlight but as soon as someone was completely infatuated with her, she didn't want that attention. And yeah, the whole "Friend" thing kinda weirds me out, especially because he's not the kid of "friend" I would ever want.

  5. Mcole….

I do agree with you. It was ironic that he called Ellie a “miserable creepy dope" when he was a creeper himself. That was totally contradicting.

  6. Ademyan...

Your idea of her wanting everyone to look at her and then having that turn for the worst is very evident in this story. I also think this is a more modern thing. So many woman today are trying to look good that they get caught up in it. Connie got caught up for just one second then it was too late for her. So if this mentality would have been absent from her mind for just a few minutes while that creepy guy showed up, it would have been the difference from life and death.
