This story was written in 3rd person- limited point of view for a reason.. Why do you believe Joyce Carol Oates used this P.O.V. and type of narrator?
Better yet, ....
• If this was changed to a less knowledgeable narrator or point of view, what effect would it have on the reader?
I believe that Joyce Carol Oates used this point of view to keep the reader in a state of suspense and keep us thinking. If this story didn't have this suspense it wouldn't be the same story. I think she wanted to leave us thinking and wonder about what is really happening instead of just giving us all the details. It all connects to the effect that it would have if she had use another point of view. If we knew everything that was going on in everyone's head, there will be no story. What will be the point of reading the story if you knew what was going to happen? If we knew what was going on inside of Arnold, the story will be completely ruin. I believe the author used this point of view in purpose to make us do inferences and create our own endings and opinions.
ReplyDeleteJoyce Carol Oates used this point of view to keep the readers thinking and to add suspense. Having the story in 3rd person definitely made it better if it wasn't, it wouldn't of been as interesting and wouldn't have "us" readers in the edge of our seat. If the author used any other point of view it would be pointless to read because we would of suspected what was going to happen. We wouldn't of had to read any further. The way this story was formed was perfect.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Joyce Carol Oates used third point of view to add suspense to the story. If it would've been in first point of view it wouldn't have been as interesting. I agree with smontero. The story being written in 3rd point of view, made us anxious to know what actually happens!
ReplyDeleteI agree with gsantiago the story is more interesting that we hear everyone's thoughts. we understand exactly what their thinking and feeling. It wouldn't be exciting had it been told a different way
